My Mayport roots go back three or four generations on both sides, but as my dad is fond of
saying, Mom grew up across the marsh in East Mayport while he lived in the "big city" of
Mayport proper. They both grew up with Minorcans-Arnaus, Andreus, Miers, Canovas and the
rest. While several of my relatives have married into Minorcan families, I don't have a
drop of Minorcan blood in me-a fact I will never forgive my ancestors for. Despite my
rich ancestral heritage, I am a hopeless Minorcan wannabe.
My paternal grandmother, Edith Singleton Cooper, had been raised with a strong sense of
family and she instilled that family pride in her four children. Her son Martin married
the Minorcan Asia Carolyn Andrew. Her daughter Helen married Hilton Martin Floyd, a
Minorcan who was also proud of his heritage.
When I was young I had no interest in any of this; however, over the past few years I've
caught the genealogy bug. Like most people my age, I wish I'd listened more when the
grandparents talked about the past. Fortunately for us all, Aunt Helen did listen.
She spent countless hours researching both families, as well as all things Mayport
and Minorcan. Following in her footsteps, I'd like to someday see an exhaustive
"Mayport Family Tree" showing all the interconnected families. Communities like Mayport
are quickly becoming a thing of the past and a master tree would be an invaluable tool to
future amateur genealogists.
Thanks in advance to all those willing to contribute to this effort.
