This vicar, Rvd. Dr. Pedro Camps, is the same priest, native of Mercadel, who in March, 1768, accompanied those Menorcans who emigrated on the hazardous journey to Florida. They suffered all sorts of tribulations. Father Camps was the last to abandonThe Menorcan Colony in New Smyrna, Florida and walk the distance to St. Augustine with the Menorcans where he died in the year 1790. He was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of St. Augustine. The Menorcan colony dedicated to him an artistic sculpture of bronze, situated in the flower gardens next to the Cathedral. The monument was solemnly inaugurated the 24 day of April, 1975, with the assistance of the fourth bishop of Florida, the governor, secretary of state, and the adjutant general of Florida; the local authorities, and a group of half a hundred Menorcans that traveled especially to join in the joy of this feast in honor of the meritorious and zealous priest, Father Campo.
