IN 1804, the Spanish government
granted to one, ANDRES PACETTI II, a section of land, 640 acres in
all. The land is situated on the road and the Surname bears his name,
Pacetti Road in St, Augustine, Fl. Mill Creek. All my aunts and uncles
as well as great-great ancestors have lived on this land. As a young boy, I have
hunted and played all over this land including Pacetti Bay. Pacetti
Bay is where Domingo Pacetti hid out while he was a scout for the Confederate
Army. I have documented stories of Indian raids and scalping as well as
establishing friendship with the Indians. My Dear Aunt, Lorna Maria
Pacetti Ortagus, presently lives with her husband Hiram Frances Ortagus in the
second house that was constructed on the property. The first house burn
down when my Grandfather, Frederick Bernard Pacetti, lit his pipe from a piece
of fat pine splinter and unknowingly discarded it into the fireplace wood
pile. All contents of the original house were lost and my mother and her
parents and siblings came out with only what they were wearing.
All my Pacetti, Rogero, Hernandez, Andreu, Pons, Segui, Canova, Ponz, Vila,
Mastre(Masters), Cercopoly, Oliveros, Ruidavets, Cardona and many more of
my relatives, pitched in and constructed a new home which still stands
on Pacetti Road. Many of my Pacetti relatives are buried in the
Mill Creek Cemetery as well as San Lorenzo Cemetery here in St. Augustine,
Florida.
The small community including Tocoi,
Picolata, Bakersville, Sampson and surrounding areas, received the word of
the Pacetti Home being lost to a fire. They gathered clothes and house
hold items and brought them by horse and buggy to the family. All my
relatives, which are many, gathered and constructed a new home, while the women
cooked and fed them through the day and night construction. The many
family relatives just camped under the stars with their family as construction
continued. During those days there was NO FENCE LAW and the live stock
roamed the many acres and had to be rounded up from the swamps and
forest.
My family Menorcan Roots run deep and
strong. We continue to maintain the STRONG FAMILY CONNECTION but
I can truthfully say that I may not recognize all of my relatives at first
glance. I had to look long and hard to find a loving wife with no
blood line relationship.
