The local dialect, Menorqui, derives from the Catalan
language, a legacy of the 13th century when Alfons III of Aragon expelled the
Moors and took control of the island. The locals all speak Spanish and don’t
expect you to master their dialect. But it always goes down well if you can
manage a few words.
