Being understood

The local dialect, Menorqui, derives from the Catalan language, a legacy of the 13th century when Alfons III of Aragon expelled the Moors and took control of the island. The locals all speak Spanish and don’t expect you to master their dialect. But it always goes down well if you can manage a few words.
