The two English occupations in Menorca left rather deep traces. Many were in the architecture, as guillotine windows and tribunes on the fronts of houses, and "bow windows" (from which the Menorcan word "boinder" came.) Many vulgar expressions in the Menorcan language are undoubtedly of English origin: botil for bottle; to have one ull blee for a purple or black eye; de black for Negro; penny for ser tan pobre que no tienne ni un; pinxa for herring; faitim for thrashing; xequens - handshake; cxeo - chalk or gypsum to write with, etc. It is a pity that these expressions are being lost.
